1. What can technical grade calcium chloride granules be used for most often?
Most of all for de-icing and de-dusting. It is a white, odourless, solid substance reminding of common salt. It is a pure inorganic compound that does not leave any dust-like and/or oily remnants behind. Calcium chloride does not cause definable environmental issues under condition of correct delivery.
2. What does it mean that the calcium chloride granule is of 94 to 98%?
94-98% means the content of calcium chloride, in the form of percentage by weight. E.g.: 100 kg of the product of 94 to 98% contains minimum 94 kg, maximum 98 kg of calcium chloride. The rest is, 2 to 6 kg, what is called crystal water.
3. Why are granules of 94 to 98% better than that of 74 to 77% mostly available?
The granules of 94 to 98% distributed by our company are the best and purest calcium chloride product currently available on the market. The reason for this is that the product of 94 to 98% contains 20.5% more active substance of calcium chloride on average therefore a more intense ice-melting as well as dust-binding effect can be achieved with it in contrast to products of 74 to 77%.
4. What is calcium chloride exactly and what is used for most frequently?
Calcium chloride is the (CaCl2) compound of calcium with chlorine, which forms a solid white salt. Its application is varied on a broad scale: making roads non-slippery, cement additive, de-dusting substance (summer roads, municipal construction sites), de-misting of gases, additive for the foodstuff industry.
5. Why is this product more ecofriendly and efficient than conventional road salt (NaCl)?
The harmful effect of conventional road salt (NaCl) on plants (makes soils alkalised) and living aquatic resources has been proved by many studies. Its melting is not effective below –7°C.
Calcium chloride is an ecofriendly alternative solution to conventional road salt as it is not harmful to plants. On top of that, its melting effects reach as low as –35°C therefore its specific quantity for the use is less.
6. How long can calcium chloride granules be used for?
The calcium chloride granules of 94 to 98% in sealed, airtight condition cannot go off, nor perish in principle therefore it can be used as long as you like.
The opened packaging must be hermetically re-sealed after use as it binds the humidity content of air rapidly, through which it gets dissolved and ended up “as-aggregated”. The product thereby does not go off but the extent of the desired melting effect can be largely decreased.
7. What precautions must be followed in the use of the product?
The concentrated calcium chloride containing high content of active substance is irritant. Direct inhalation must be avoided, wearing glosses and protective goggles is recommended during use. Storing products containing calcium chloride in sodium and/or zinc-contaning recipients is prohibited.
8. How to prepare a solution from calcium chloride granules?
Calcium chloride dissolves in water easily, therefore, it does not require any special mixing process. The water and added granules form a solution in 8 to 12 minutes. Attention! During the dissolution process significant heat is released, which is able to heat the solution to 70 to 80°C, therefore, particular caution should be exercised, when preparing the solution.
The calculation of the expected concentration during the preparation is not simple as the product contains crystal water that must be considered. Examples for preparation of solution:

Thus the preparation of 1000 litre 25% solution – which melts as low as –27°C – requires 333 kg of granules of 94% to 98% and 917 litre of water.
9. How is de-icing done, what is its principle of operation?
Making icy and/or snowy roads non-slippery starts with the delivery of de-icing substance. Calcium chloride forms a solution with water (ice, snow) whose freezing point is lower, therefore, it remains in liquid state. Calcium chloride is the most efficient ecofriendly ice and snow-dissolving product.
10. Is the use of solution or granules more recommended?
Both calcium chloride solution and granules can be used. It depends on the method of delivery which is more worth using.
Based on many years experience, granules of 94 to 98% or a solution of 20 to 35%, respectively is recommended to use.
11. How and how much should granules be delivered onto road surfaces?
Granules must be delivered homogeneously onto road surfaces manually or using a spreader. After delivery, the melting effect starts immediately accompanied by an intense heat generation. The active substance may remain for 2 to 3 days on the road surface, during which it provides an ice-free condition.
The quantity to be delivered: between 15 g to 50 g/sqm of granules of 94 to 98% depending on the temperature and snowing intensity.
12. How and how much solution must be delivered onto road surfaces?
The solution must be delivered homogeneously onto road surfaces manually or using a spreader. After delivery, the melting effect starts immediately. The active substance may remain for 2 to 3 days on the road surface, during which it provides an ice-free condition.
The quantity to be delivered: between 30 ml to 90 ml/sqm of 25% solution depending on the temperature and snowing intensity.
13. Is there a deposit formed during the preparation of solution from the granules?
The calcium chloride granules of 94 to 98% distributed by us is an extremely high purity product. No deposit is formed during the preparation of solution.
